What should I do if I have no internet connection?

If you have no internet connection, you can still connect with the IDR and complete an impact report using the FIA IDR app, upon submission you will be asked to retry submitting the report or select to upload it later when you have internet connection again. If you select the latter, you must relaunch the app when you have internet connection.

What should I do if a competitor's IDR has been damaged in an impact?

If you suspect a competitor’s IDR has been damaged in an impact, please remove the IDR from the vehicle, making a note of the competitor and their contact details, then email support@impactdetect.com to arrange a replacement IDR.

What is the 'IDR Inside' vehicle sticker for?

The IDR Inside sticker is affixed to the exterior of vehicles fitted with an IDR. The sticker is to help officials identify if a vehicle has an IDR following an incident. The QR code on the IDR Inside sticker links back to the FIA IDR website support pages.

The competitors IDR is damaged or the QR has faded

If the IDR is damaged or the QR code is faded, the IDR function and/or the ability for the IDR to connect with the FIA IDR app may be compromised. Please contact support@impactdetect.com

I can't remember my passcode to access the app

Please contact your ASN who will issue you with their ASN passcode to access the officials functionality within the FIA IDR app.

I am an official and a competitor, can I use both versions of the app?

Yes, you are able to logout of the officials area if you have an IDR you wish to activate as a competitor. You must have your ASN access code to re-enter the officials area of the FIA IDR app.

What happens if I forget to take a photo of an incident?

The app requires at least one image to complete the report. If you have taken no images, take any photo using your phone, this will allow you to proceed with the report, you can then add as much information as possible in the ‘additional info’ section.

Can I close the app whilst the impacts are downloading?

We recommend staying on the IDR App until the download is completed.

Does the IDR 'switch off'?

No, the sensors have a 2-year lifespan, and are programmed to stay awake so they will never miss an impact.

Where does the IDR report data go?

The reports submitted via the FIA IDR app are rerouted through a secure server and sent to the owning ASN in a PDF report format.

An Introduction to the Impact Data Recorder

The FIA Impact Data Recorder is a small and lightweight electronic device with a microchip sensor. It is fitted in a vehicle’s cockpit to accurately measure vehicle incident impact data. IDRs are low-cost, simple to fit, and require no maintenance in their 2-year lifespan.

The IDR has been developed to collect big data, allowing the FIA to learn more about impacts and gain knowledge of different accident types. By identifying incident trends and gaining in-depth incident data, we can achieve safer racing at all levels.

FIA IDR for ASNs

Through the collection of big data using the system, ASNs alongside the FIA will be able to identify impact trends and gain real world impact insight to improve safety in motorsport.

Smart Safety
The system includes an Impact Data Recorder (IDR) and a mobile phone application. The IDR device is small, lightweight, durable device with a two-year, maintenance-free lifespan. It records and stores X, Y, and Z acceleration data. Once installed in a vehicle cockpit, it records all high-G impacts over a set threshold.
Instant Scan
When a vehicle with an IDR installed is involved in an accident, the impact data can be downloaded by a Race Official by scanning the unique QR code found on the front of the IDR to download the impact data via the IDR App.
Detailed Review
Race Officials can then use the app to add supplementary information to the accident report such as photos, notes, and medical information before submitting the report to the ASN through a secure cloud server.
Analysis
The ASN receives the accident report and are then able to analyse the data to help identify any trends or safety hazards.

Installing your IDR Safely

Identify a suitable area to affix your IDR; we suggest on the floor and as close to the centre of the cockpit as possible, such as under the seat in a formula car, or the transmission tunnel in a touring car.

WARNING: Do not install the IDR in a location that will get hot, e.g. above the exhaust.

Stick & Set

Clean and degrease the chosen area to fit your IDR using a solvent degreasing solution or similar. Then remove the backing from the adhesive pad on the rear of the IDR and affix it to the chassis. Ensure that the tip of the IDR’s arrow-shaped body is facing directly towards the front of the car.

Activate IDR

Once your IDR is fitted, download the FIA IDR App on the App Store or Google Play. Once downloaded, select ‘Activate IDR’ in-app, enter your email address and scan the IDR’s unique QR code using your phone’s camera to activate it.

Confirmation

You will receive a notification when activation has been successful. You are now ready to use the FIA IDR App to monitor impact data, review reports, and enhance safety tracking.
